The process of milling or routing using a CNC machine at the GSD consists of the following steps. :

...

STEP 1. Model the geometry representing what you want to make in modeling software such as Rhino or CAD.

STEP 2. Start thinking about the material to mill. The material choice will determine the MasterCAM template type and, more importantly, modeling parameters (i.g. extrusion heights).

STEP 3. Edit that geometry so it can be used to define the path of the cutting tool.

STEP 4. Assign toolpaths to that geometry using toolpath generating software such as MasterCAM. When setting up the file, start from the MasterCAM template

STEP 5. Submit your job. Attach the MasterCAM file along with your original 3D modeling file (i.e., 3dm. file) on GSD Fabrication Lab page.

...

2) approve the job for you to schedule a time.

STEP 7. Prepare material to be milled.

If you have questions about file preparation, tool selection, or material preparation, please meet with a TA during office hours. To make an appointment, contact a CNC TA at cncta@gsd.harvard.edu. Be prepared to participate in the process from conception to cleanup.
