We used the Pantheon set of type Ia supernovae to look for any evidence of oscillations in the Universe's expansion history. Imagine that, as the universe was expanding, the energy density of dark energy, or the strength of gravity, or some other important cosmic property was oscillating. How might that show up, and do we see any evidence of it?
We developed a statistical test, based on Fourier analysis, to search for evidence of such oscillations. We found that there was no evidence of cosmic oscillations, and constrained a few simple oscillatory cosmic models.
