For cataloging rare or early printed materials, follow the rules set forth in DCRM(B) Section 1B (or other DCRM standard as appropriate) or DCRMR Chapter 1.
For cataloging using RDA, be mindful to remember regarding RDA differences in constructing, and punctuating, formal titles:
- When cataloging a single sheet printed item that does not have a title, use judgement as to whether the 245 should be bracketed. Always
- RBS practice is always to add a 500 note "Title devised by cataloger" or some similar phrasing (see RDA 2.20.2.3). RDA instructions on this situation ("Title supplied by cataloger."
- 2.2.4 (Other sources of information) gives a note or bracket option; RBS catalogers should use judgement about bracketing but are still requested to include a note.
- 2.3.2.11 (Recording devised titles) ) are somewhat ambiguous. provides some excellent suggestions about the content of devised titles; 2.3.2.11.1 covers music, 2.3.2.11.2 covers maps, etc.
- When in doubt, bracket the constructed devised title and add a note.
- Do not use the GMDDo not use "microform". add a GMD (general material designation) in RDA cataloging.
- When found in historical records to be upgraded to RDA, please remove.
- Due to Harvard's past policy of using a single bibliographic record for multiple versions, microform holdings are generally added to will often be found on the bibliographic record for the print original.
- For more information about cataloging microfilms, see Metadata Standard Working Group's Best Practice for Commercially Produced Reproductions.
