It's important to create an item record at time of cataloging. It may be a placeholder with a "dummy" barcode until end-processing is complete but it ensures that the item is requestable in the reading room.
There are four important fields to fill out in the item record: Barcode, Material type, Item policy, and Description.
Field | Value | Notes |
---|---|---|
Barcode | Generate a dummy barcode while awaiting end-processing | |
Material type | Manuscript | Always use "Manuscript" for single items that have an associated "m" in the bibliographic record LDR byte 7. These single items can be any format: photograph or other non-projected graphic, map, music, object, etc. |
Item policy | Special Collections requestable (91) | |
Description | Box 1 or blank | If the single item is going in a box, please enumerate the Box in the Description field. If the single item is shelved upright as a volume or otherwise, leave the Description field blank. |
