In general, follow the guidelines in DCRM(B), Area 5, or RDA Chapters 3 and 7.

ILLUSTRATIONS
  • Record the number of illustrations when it can be ascertained easily (e.g., 3 colored illustrations).  For RDA instructions, see Chapter 7.15.
  • The fixed fields should correlate. If the illustrations are deemed important, add an additional 336 (e.g., 336 $$a still image $$b sti $$2 rdacontent). If making a 336 for still images, also make an 006 for them.
  • For rare materials, catalogers may include reference to the specific process, e.g. illustrations (wood engravings). Alternatively, the specific process may be described in a 500 field.
SIZE
  • For difference in height of the publication to the height of the binding, follow the guidelines as stated in DCRMB 5D1.2: "If a publication is bound, measure the height of the binding. When the height of the publication differs by 3 centimeters or more from the height of the binding, specify both."

For example:

    • $$c 12 cm bound to 20 cm
  • In the case of bound-withs where individual pieces inside the volume differ in size by 3 centimeters or more, give the height of the binding in $$c and, if deemed necessary, make a more extensive descriptive note about the height of the individual title in the holdings record.
FORMAT
  • For hand-press publications, add the bibliographical format in parentheses following the size statement in $$c.

For example:

  • $$c 20 cm (4to)
  • CAVEAT: Beware of book dealer's descriptions of format, which is usually based on size rather than an expression of how the original sheet was imposed and folded.
