All cataloged items should receive full-level cataloging, with subject headings assigned according to the latest edition of LCSH Manual.  When records are exported from OCLC into Alma, do not delete FAST (Faceted Application of Subject Terminology) headings, unless the headings are inaccurate.

If appropriate terms are not found from LCSH, consult other authorized thesauri listed below.

Prospectively: If a cataloger encounters a bib record containing the LCSH term "slaves" (or other related terms) while copy cataloging, an additional term "enslaved people" (or other related terms) will be added to the OCLC record before importing it into Alma.  DO NOT delete the existing LCSH terms.

In case of attaching an additional holdings record to an existing bib record in Alma, add the preferred term to both OCLC and Alma.

Example: 650#7 $$a Enslaved people. $$2 ascl

N.B. March 2022 Update: Following the period of additional research and internal evaluation, the Library of Congress will support the change of the heading Slaves to Enslaved persons. Due to the large volume of headings associated with the heading change, a special list for Slaves/Enslaved persons will be issued.

Works on a specific indigenous people or group of peoples are entered under the ethnic group, e.g. Navajo Indians.")
