October 24, 2023

  • Finally got in touch with Applied Image, and sent them 3 dxf files of ComCam masks to make. One is one hole per amp, one is an L shape, and one is two lines of holes with different shapes.
  • Went to the machine shop. Can't repeat online the things that were said there, but the parts haven't been started yet. They are busy. They said they would give me an estimate by the end of the day today.
  • Talked to Larom. There's a bug at USDF so she can't get onboarded yet. Her plot of FWHM vs airmass was useful to the dm science pipelines team. They found that the location of AuxTel was recorded incorrectly in the header. They haven't figured out why the fit never finds FWHM = 1.6.
  • Talked to Parker. Will try to get to Chile by Nov. 6, maybe Nov 13 at the latest. I need to talk to Erin about filing a TR and how I should do that now. She also suggested I make a Keysight CSC PR sooner, so I can get feedback from Eric and Tiago.
  • Talked to Meghan. She will start working on the aerosol project that Chris suggested.
  • Moved the Meade telescope that Chris brought onto the table. Going to set things up so I can do measurements of the lens PSF with it.
  • Continued adding to the AT pinhole overleaf (while sitting in on zoom meetings).
  • Yesterday we got to the point with the Keysight CSC that we could take data and try to write a fits file, but for some reason it wouldn't write the fits file to disk. And then I checked and the electrometer could no longer connect (over either the CSC or telnet). I asked Parker to restart the Keysight. It didn't work. I posted in rubinobs-it-tucson. They told me to file a Jira ticket. In the end Parker made it work by running ifup enp2s0.
  • I gave DeeDee and Mark the initial masks we want to make.
  • Tonight, I'm going to help Kevin Fanning rebuild the DIMM pointing model and generally learn how to use the DIMM. I'll try to get him to run it nightly.
    • Update: tried to build a new pointing model, but there were only 3 stars that we could find on one hemishphere, so we gave up. We are running the DIMM for the night, though. Hopefully it will close successfully in the morning.

October 25, 2023

  • Made a ticket for the AuxTel baffle: https://jira.lsstcorp.org/browse/SUMMIT-8089
  • Heard back from Todd at the machine shop - they will have the parts done by the end of the week.
  • At CBP update meeting, I learned that the electrometer CSC has to be designed so that it can take both the Keithley and the electrometer in one. I have to make sure I modify things correctly. I think I've been doing it wrong...
  • Had issues with pushing the Keysight electrometer code to the lsst-ts GitHub. I had to set up 2FA on GitHub and then it worked fine.
  • Got a response back from Applied Image. Seems like the dxf files didn't properly convert between AutoDesk Fusion and AutoCad, and for some reason the scaling was off by an order of magnitude and there were extra lines in some of the dots. Hopefully we're solving that now...
  • Spent a long time looking for the right adapters for the Meade telescope, and also looking at various manuals and online to figure out the location of the focus behind the secondary. I was unsuccessful, but I have some slightly wrong adapters that should work.

October 26, 2023

  • Worked with Ali on the paper. He's doing great!
  • Got new masks from DeeDee. See CBP mask confluence page: https://confluence.lsstcorp.org/display/LTS/Rubin+CBP+mask+design+notes. I think this is good enough for us. The one concern is that it doesn't take 50 mm masks, but rather 47.5 mm masks. Are we okay with a non-standard size? The opening is 44.5 mm, which I think is okay since 3.5 degrees is just under 39 mm.
  • The diameter of M1 for the telescope Chris got is 304.8 mm (or, that's what's quoted as the size). So I measured out 304.8 mm and moved an LED (not a laser as Chris wanted) until the beam on the wall was that size.
    • The location of collimation was closer to the primary than I was expecting. Pulling back the fiber location did decrease the size of the resultant spot.
    • I then moved the optic until it was in front of the beam. Seems like the focus is pretty promising, but tomorrow I will try to set up and measure the actual size. Here you can see the setup, the before focus red spot (note how the spider is not centered, but I think that's okay), the after focus red spot, and something approximating best focus.
  • Got the mil spec connector holder back from the machine shop. It's mostly fine but somehow the screw locations for the mil spec connector are in the wrong place, so I'll have to drill them and tap them in the correct place. Must have been my mistake but I thought I was pretty careful. I was also supposed to get the other piece back today but it wasn't there.

October 27, 2023

  • DeeDee sent mask designs to Joe.
  • Reached out to everyone with image quality team action items to get their status and updated the Image Quality team meeting notes page
  • Started putting an IQ ComCam plan together: https://confluence.lsstcorp.org/display/LSSTCOM/ComCam+Image+Quality+Commissioning+Plan
  • Got the threaded tube back from the machine shop. It seems to fit well. I really need the last piece (that was supposed to be made first...). Sent an email to them begging them to make the last piece.
  • Started making a list of tests to run and things to do for the CBP Calibration system: CBP Calibration System To Do
  • Talked to Parker about how to update the electrometer CSC to be able to handle both the Keysight and the Keithley CSC. Notes on the confluence page: https://confluence.lsstcorp.org/display/LTS/Electrometer+CSC+Notes
  • Talked to Sandrine about the Image Quality commissioning plan. I've updated the confluence page accordingly.
    • One conclusion is that at the next IQ meeting we'll discuss whether to install DIMSUM or DSM in Simonyi (what would be needed for each to work, etc.)

October 30, 2023

  • sent a draft of the IQ SPIE paper abstract to Sandrine
  • sent a drawing of the photodiode holder part to the machine shop because they said they were having trouble with the step file and answered their follow up questions.
  • submitted my TR for traveling to Tucson. Lubi said that I need dates before things can be approved.
  • met with Jeff Carlin and went through the photometric calibration requirements and figured out who we are going to ask to lead each of them. Douglas also agreed to talk about white dwarfs at our next meeting.
  • updated Keysight CSC so it can hopefully handle both Keithley and Keysight

October 31, 2023

  • CSC didn't fully work, so worked on that today. It now mostly works, but I used to be able to change mode (including yesterday), and now I can't. I think the electrometer may need to be restarted.
  • picked up the final machine shop part - it works!
  • Met with Larom. Unsure how to solve her USDF and slack connection problems, so we're asking for help.

November 1, 2023

  • made a PR for the Keysight CSC
  • sent another round of dxf files to Applied Image
  • drilled and tapped the appropriate holes for the mil spec connector
  • talked to Mark and DeeDee and converged on a final mask holder design. They will make final drawings and probably also manufacture it

November 2, 2023

  • got quote for photolithographic masks.
  • tried putting the photodiode holder together. It mostly works, but it's hard to screw the two SM-2 threaded pieces together. Maybe they need to be oiled?
  • Made a presentation for the IQ meeting tomorrow.
  • Made plan for photodiode testing

November 3, 2023

  • Worked with Johnny to replace batteries in the DIMSUM transmitter and receiver. Got everything working again. It's off for now and Johnny will come up on Tuesday (if there's an AuxTel run - Craig gives it a 50/50 chance) to turn things back on. If there's time, we might also try to refocus and repoint the camera. There are sources, but the pegboard isn't centered and the PSF isn't great.
  • Read through the DIMSUM paper - we're basically there!
  • Worked on the Keysight CSC. Trying to get docker working on Macs is a big pain... Got everything working eventually, except for flake8 (see confluence page). There's a timeout issue with the Keithley. Not sure what the issue is.

November 6, 2023

  • Updated calibration hardware confluence page.
  • Presented on the CBP mask plans.
    • Feedback: need to change so we can handle crosstalk
    • need to double check smallest spot size you can make on the camera (I think it's 5 um * 16 = 80 um but have to confirm)
    • need to make an exposure time calculator
    • Eli wants to do aperture photometry on spots, so smallest spots possible in a reasonable amount of time, hence the need for ETC
    • No one cares about simulated satellite streaks
    • Eli doesn't want a giant spot per CCD - that just feels like flat-fielding to him
    • Chris voiced the concern of how e2v is set up and we have to make sure everything works with the appropriate parity shifts
    • Jeremy pointed out that +/- 0.5 um on hole size isn't good enough for us, but there might be mitigation strategies
  • went to machine shop. They redid the threading and greased it. I also dropped off the carbon fiber tube
  • Ali submitted the DIMSUM paper. Yay!
  • I realized that the IDF EFD actually has all the old EFD data now. Guillem asked about the AuxTel LUT so I sent him Chris's writeup and also all of that data.

November 7, 2023

  • Worked with Johnny, who repointed and refocused DIMSUM. The PSFs aren't great, but Johnny confirmed none of them are donuts. They're workable. I set it up to take two bursts every 10 minutes 500 times.
  • Gave Larom the IDF EFD hexapod data. She'll get to it sooner than Guillem. She'll model the hexapod X, Y, and Z position as a function of elevation and temperature, compare her results to Chris's results, and seeing if there's a significant difference in the modeling before and after Feb. 2023 (CWFS to WEP), and look at the rms of the model fit.
  • Got parts back from the machine shop. They work! We can now solder the photodiode.
  • Booked lodging for the trip to Tucson.

November 8, 2023

  • Picked up masks from Joe at SAO
  • Soldered photodiode + temperature sensor together

November 9, 2023

  • Worked on setting up system so I could take photodiode QE measurements

November 10, 2023

  • Got setup working so that I could take large photodiode QE data - see confluence page
  • Did some soldering for the photodiode
  • talked to Todd at the machine shop about how he'll cut the carbon fiber tube

November 11, 2023

  • Finished soldering and took photodiode QE data (see confluence page)
  • assembled all components I had of the CBP calibration system (see confluence page)

November 13, 2023

  • Parker was out sick, but I arrived in Tucson and worked on the electrometer CSC

November 14, 2023

  • submitted the Image Quality SPIE abstract and uploaded the final version to docushare
  • began taking DIMSUM data again at 11:38 am MST
  • fixed the Keithley CSC
  • analyzed the photodiode QE data (see confluence page)

November 15, 2023

  • Made an assembly diagram for the CBP calibration system, sent it to Parker, and added it to the confluence page
  • Mounted the masks (see confluence page)
  • Focused the CBP and then took uniformity tests (see https://confluence.lsstcorp.org/display/LTS/CBP+Tests+November+-+December+2023)
  • work on v&v
  • fixed electrometer CSC so it can make fits files with data with arbitrary elements from both Keysight and Keithley electrometers
  • No labels
