Checking the Condition of an Item (In House Scans)

Checking the Condition of an Item (In House Scans)

Although in house scans are not necessarily subject to the same restrictions as the lab or studio, there are some issues, which may impact the quality of the scan. Please see below for potential challenges to using the KIC scanner or Hovercam.

Maximum Capture Size

Hovercam size: 13” x 21”

KIC size: 12.25" x 19.2"

*Items larger than these measurements will need to be taken with a phone or other camera.

Volumes

Thickness: The KIC scanner has difficulty focusing on volumes and other items that are thick.

Opening:  The KIC scanner has a built in cradle, but the opening is sometimes too wide for some material. Can try a different cradle; however results may vary. The Hovercam can scan material in wide cradles.

Gutter: Material with text or script in the gutter will be difficult to scan well.

Loose

Wrinkles & Folds: This may obscure the text or script. Can be sent to conservation to be treated.
