Citation Linking Tools: Update E-Resource Links to OpenAthens
Reminder: Harvard Library EZproxy is being disabled. Any library resource link that includes “ezp-prod1.hul.harvard.edu” in the URL will stop working on May 31, 2026.
Overview
As we transition away from EZproxy, it's important to stop using the Harvard Library EZproxy prefix in your citation managers and bookmarks. To ensure seamless access to your citations, follow the steps below to update existing links and avoid generating EZproxy links in the future.
Please note, there is no automated method to switch link authentication from EZproxy to OpenAthens. Any links containing .ezp-prod1.hul.harvard.edu will need to be updated manually. Use our EZproxy Link Transformer tool to help you.
This section applies to the Zotero desktop application. See the next section for information on updating the Zotero Connector browser extension.
To continue using Zotero, the proxy settings must be updated to point to LibKey. To verify that your proxy settings are correct in Zotero:
In the General tab, scroll to Locate and open the dropdown next to "Resolver"
Go to "North America," and then select Harvard.
In the Base URL field, you should now see a LibKey URL.
Any saved items in your Zotero Library with EZProxy URLs will need to be manually updated.
Click on the URL field in your item’s details to make it editable. Highlight and copy the entire URL. Go to the EZproxy Link Transformer and paste the copied URL into the tool. Copy the new URL that the tool generates. Return to your item’s details and paste the updated URL into the URL field. Click outside the URL field to save your changes.
If you have “Check Harvard Library” installed as a bookmark in your browser, consider switching to a browser extension like LibKey Nomad or Lean Library instead. These newer tools offer more complete, seamless linking to Harvard Library resources and are actively managed and kept up to date by the library.
This section is for the Zotero Connector web browser extension. See the previous section for information on updating the Zotero desktop application.
To continue using the Zotero Connector browser extension, any saved proxy settings need to be removed. Select your web browser below to see instructions on updating your settings:
Open Zotero Connector settings: Click the Zotero Connection icon (a small "Z" or page-type icon) in the toolbar area to the right of your browser address bar. Right-click the Zotero Connector icon and select Options from the context menu. If you don't see it, click the puzzle piece icon (Extensions) - it may be hidden there. Click the three dots and choose Options. Alternatively, go to the extensions page, find Zotero Connector, and click Details > Extension options. Click on the Proxies tab within the settings menu. Select the EZproxy configuration Find the box labeled “Configured proxies” and look for a URL in the list that includes the term “http://ezp-prod1.hul.harvard.edu ”. If it’s not there, you’re done! If it is there, select it and go to the next step. Remove hostnames With the “http://ezp-prod1.hul.harvard.edu ” URL selected in “Configured Proxies”, find the box at the bottom labeled Hostnames. Select a hostname in the list and then press the minus ('-') button. Do that for each hostname until none remain in the list. Remove configured proxies Select the ‘http://ezp-prod1.hul.harvard.edu ' URL again in the “Configured proxies” box and press the minus ('-') button below to remove it. Disable proxy redirection Locate the checkbox labeled Enable proxy redirection. Uncheck this box to disable proxy redirection. Clear your browser cookies.

On the left-hand side click Extensions Extensions and find the "Zotero Connector". Click on the three dots and choose Options. Click on the Proxies tab within the settings menu. Select the EZproxy configuration Find the box labeled “Configured proxies” and look for a URL in the list that includes the term “ ”. If it’s not there, you’re done! If it is there, select it and go to the next step. Remove hostnames With the “ ” URL selected in “Configured Proxies”, find the box at the bottom labeled Hostnames. Select a hostname in the list and then press the minus ('-') button. Do that for each hostname until none remain in the list. Remove configured proxies Select the ‘ ' URL again in the “Configured proxies” box and press the minus ('-') button below to remove it. Click on the Proxies tab within the settings menu. Select the EZproxy configuration Find the box labeled “Configured proxies” and look for a URL in the list that includes the term “ ”. If it’s not there, you’re done! If it is there, select it and go to the next step. Remove hostnames With the “ ” URL selected in “Configured Proxies”, find the box at the bottom labeled Hostnames. Select a hostname in the list and then press the minus ('-') button. Do that for each hostname until none remain in the list. Remove configured proxies Select the ‘ ' URL again in the “Configured proxies” box and press the minus ('-') button below to remove it. Disable proxy redirection Locate the checkbox labeled Enable proxy redirection. Uncheck this box to disable proxy redirection. Clear your browser cookies.
EndNote
To continue using EndNote, the proxy settings must be updated to point to LibKey. To verify that your proxy settings are correct in EndNote:
In the EndNote toolbar, select Edit (Windows) or EndNote 2025 (Mac).
Select Preferences (some versions may say Settings)
Go to Find Full Text
In the OpenURL Path field, you should now see a LibKey URL.
To continue using the EndNote web browser extension, follow the above steps and then sync your EndNote account - Set up EndNote sync instructions

Other Browser Extensions and Bookmarks
LibKey Nomad
If you use LibKey Nomad, no action is needed. Simply select Harvard University as your institution in the Nomad extension settings, and Harvard Library will ensure up-to-date access.
Lean Library
If you use Lean Library, no action is needed. Simply select Harvard as your institution in the Lean Library extension settings, and Harvard Library will ensure up-to-date access.
“Check Harvard Library” Bookmark
If you have “Check Harvard Library” installed as a bookmark in your browser, consider switching to a browser extension like LibKey Nomad or Lean Library instead. These newer tools offer more complete, seamless linking to Harvard Library resources and are actively managed and kept up to date by the library.
To continue using Check Harvard Library, the proxy settings must be updated to point to OpenAthens.
Find the bookmark in your browser and open it for editing: Method 1: Right-click on the “Check Harvard Library” bookmark in the bookmark bar and select “Edit”. Method 2: Select “Bookmarks” in your browser menu, navigate to the “Check Harvard Library” bookmark, and select Edit. Delete the URL stored in the URL or destination field. Paste this into the URL or destination field instead:
