Plaintext Resource Type

The plaintext resource type should be used for objects primarily containing plaintext files. Plaintext consists of unformatted character strings, such as US-ASCII or UTF-8, rather than formatted text (such as what is found in a Microsoft Word or PDF document). A plaintext object must contain, at minimum, one plaintext file. Plaintext objects may also include sidecar TextMD file(s).

Object Metadata

In addition to the global metadata requirements for all objects, the following metadata elements (or specific values, as shown) are required for plaintext objects:

• Resource Type (ObjResType) = “Plaintext”

File Metadata

Content files

In addition to the global metadata requirements, the following metadata elements (or specific values, as shown) are required for plaintext content files:

• File Purpose (FilePurpose) = Data

The following metadata elements are recommended for plaintext files (if applicable):

• Character Size (TxtCharSize)

• Character Set (TxtCharset)

TextMD files

In addition to the global metadata requirements, the following metadata elements (or specific values, as shown) are required for Text MD files:

• File Purpose (FilePurpose) = Metadata

The following metadata elements (or specific values, as shown) are recommended for TextMD files:

• Metadata Role (FileMetaRole)

• Metadata Basis (FileMetaBasis)

• Byte Size (TxtByteSize)

• Character Size (TxtCharSize)

• Character Set (TxtCharset)

• Markup Basis (TxtMrkupBasis) = XML

• Markup Language (TxtMrkupLang) = TextMD: https://www.loc.gov/standards/textMD/textMD.xsd

Relationships

The following relationship metadata elements are recommended when applicable:

• Has Metadata (RelHasMeta) = TextMD[|||]urn

Delivery Requirements

IMPORTANT Plaintext objects are delivered via the File Delivery Service (direct download of the file); they are not rendered in a browser.

In addition to the requirements and recommendations above, the following file-level metadata elements are required for delivery:

• Access Flag (FileAccFlag) = “P” or “R”

• Authority Path (ProcAuthPath) must be a valid NRS authority path

• Name Pattern (ProcNamePattern)

The following file-level metadata elements are recommended for delivery:

• [File] Owner Supplied Name (D3OSN)

• File Role (FileRole) should be set to DELIVERABLE

  • TAKE NOTE When supplying multiple values for a repeatable field such as this, values should be supplied concatenated with “[|]”, such as: “PAGE_IMAGE[|]DELIVERABLE”
