Alumni e-resources This page covers access policies/logic for the main suite of university-wide licensed e-resources managed by Harvard Library ITS and LTS for access by current university students, faculty, and staff. For information about other e-resource services provided to specific Harvard schools and/or user populations, see the following:   Authorization Note: LTS does not make access policy decisions for Harvard Library content. Access policies are determined by Harvard Library, specifically the E-Resources Unit (ITS) and the Harvard Library Access and Borrowing Office (Access Services). E-Resources User Authentication and Authorization (includes Resource Sharing services ILLiad and BorrowDirect) Since February 2020, licensed e-resources and Resource Sharing services use HarvardKey together with Harvard SAML (Shibboleth) and Group Services (Grouper) to limit access to authorized members of the Harvard community. Resource Sharing services authorized in this way include ILLiad (ILL, Scan & Deliver) and BorrowDirect.  DRS User Authentication and Authorization For public-facing systems, DRS works with Harvard's central authentication (HarvardKey), LDAP, and Group Services (Grouper) to limit access to authorized members of the Harvard community. For Harvard Library administrative systems, DRS consults the LTS Policy Server to obtain individual user authorization information for the system being accessed. HathiTrust User Authentication and Authorization HathiTrust uses a different authorization system (Harvard InCommon) for access to member content than other Harvard Library resources. Because of this difference, a few groups of users who are eligible for most Harvard library resources do not have Harvard member access to HathiTrust materials, marked with asterisk (*) in the table below. Determining User Authorization/Eligibility For public-facing content that is restricted to authorized members of the Harvard community, Eligibility is determined by confirming three things: Authentication (is the user who they say they are?) Affiliation (does the user have a current Harvard affiliation?) Authorization (does the user have an active Harvard role that is eligible for access to the resource?).  All three must be confirmed for access to be granted. Grouper's affiliation reference groups are managed directly by IAM and updated daily with current membership. Special exceptions are authorized individually by Harvard Library Access and Borrowing and managed using the "HL E-Resource Special Permission" group. Any Harvard affiliations not specifically listed as authorized do not have access to Harvard Library licensed e-resources or other Harvard-restricted web content managed by the library. Grouper Update Cycle User data in Grouper reference groups are updated on an overnight cycle, so new/updated user access based on reference affiliation will typically be active by the following morning. Individual updates to Grouper managed groups are effective immediately. HathiTrust Access Gaps (asterisk) denotes that some members of user class are excluded from HathiTrust Harvard member access, as a result of differences in the way Harvard InCommon defines eligibility. This may include contract and some temporary employees, employees of Harvard-affiliated hospitals, Harvard building tenants, and departmental collaborators. (As of 2021, XID has been replaced by HarvardKey Light.) Harvard policy requires all applications that use HarvardKey group filtering to authorize their application access to exclude these users. These individuals will be barred from access even if they would ordinarily fall into an authorized group listed above.
