Audio Resource Type

The “Audio” resource type should be used for objects primarily containing sound files.

An audio object must contain, at minimum, a single sound file. Audio objects may also include audio decision lists, AES57 files, transcripts, methodology statements, or other sidecar files.

Object Metadata

In addition to the global metadata requirements for all objects, the following metadata elements (or specific values, as shown) are required for audio objects:

• Resource Type (ObjResType) = “Audio”

Audio decision list (ADL) files

In addition to the global metadata requirements, the following metadata elements (or specific values, as shown) are required for ADL files:

• Metadata Basis (FileMetaBasis) = “Sidecar”

The following metadata elements (or specific values, as shown) are recommended for ADL files:

Methodology statements

In addition to the global metadata requirements, the following metadata elements (or specific values, as shown) are required for methodology statements:

• File Purpose (FilePurpose) = “Metadata”

• File Metadata Role (FileMetaRole) = “Administrative”

• File Metadata Basis (FileMetaBasis) = “Sidecar”

The following metadata elements (or specific values, as shown) are recommended for methodology statements:

• File Role (FileRole) = “DOCUMENTATION”

• Byte Size (TxtByteSize) = 8

• Character Size (TxtCharSize) = “variable”

• Character Set (TxtCharset) = UTF-8

Relationships

Relationships can be applied at the object level or at the file level; where a relationship is applied (object or file) should be defined by whether the relationship applies to the whole object or only to one specific file within it.

The following relationship metadata elements are recommended when applicable:

• Has Documentation (RelHasDoc) = Audio Decision List[|||]/object1/adl.txt

• Has Metadata (RelHasMeta) = AES57[|||]/object1/aes57.txt

• Has Methodology (RelHasMethod) = Methodology[|||]/object1/method.txt

• Has Text (RelHasText) = Transcript[|||]/object1/transcript.txt

Audio objects may also be associated with playlist files. Playlists must be deposited as separate objects and must be deposited after the audio objects have been ingested and assigned persistent URNs.

The playlist should include “RelPresFor” values that point to each audio file referenced in the playlist.

Delivery Requirements

IMPORTANT To ensure successful delivery, audio files must be in MP3 format.

Note that while transcripts are not required for delivery, publicly available materials must conform to Harvard University’s Digital Accessibility Policy.

In addition to the requirements and recommendations above, the following file-level metadata elements are required for delivery and must be supplied for the primary content file:

• Access Flag (FileAccFlag) = “P” or “R”

• Authority Path (ProcAuthPath) must be a valid NRS authority path

• Name Pattern (ProcNamePattern)

• File Role (FileRole) should be set to DELIVERABLE

  • TAKE NOTE When supplying multiple values for a repeatable field such as this, values should be supplied concatenated with “[|]”, such as: “PAGE_IMAGE[|]DELIVERABLE”

The following file-level metadata elements are recommended for delivery:

• [File] Owner Supplied Name (D3OSN)

If a transcript is included, the following metadata element must be supplied for it:

• Access Flag (FileAccFlag) = “P” or “R”; this value must match the value for the primary content file.
