Due to the Aleph-Alma migration, permalinks to catalog records will lead to a search result by record ID, rather than opening the full detail page.
What are persistent links?
Persistent links, also called permalinks, provide durable links to records in HOLLIS, the Harvard Library catalog.
Where do I find the persistent link?
Persistent links are visible in HOLLIS towards the bottom of the catalog record.
How are persistent links formed?
For records in Alma:
https://id.lib.harvard.edu/alma/XXX/catalog
(Replace XXX with the Alma MMS ID (they all start with 99))
For Alma records migrated from Aleph, the Aleph permalink will continue to work as long as the Aleph system number is in a MARC 900 field:
https://id.lib.harvard.edu/aleph/000000000/catalog
(Replace zeros with appropriate 9-digit Aleph number)
Images
Because HOLLIS Images is a subset of HOLLIS, you can permalink to a record in either. The identifier will be the same, but the path in the permalink will determine which interface the user lands on. For records created in OLIVIA, use the VIA ID (e.g olv... ).
Record-level link to HOLLIS:
https://id.lib.harvard.edu/via/XXX/catalog
(Replace XXX with record ID (e.g. old VIA identifier)
For Image Detail (component) page in HOLLIS when there are multiple digital images per record:
https://id.lib.harvard.edu/via/XXX/urn-3:yyyy:99999/catalog
(Replace XXX with record ID (e.g. old VIA identifier); Replace yyyy:99999 with URN segment)
If a component is not digitized, it has no permalink.
To point users to HOLLIS Images instead of HOLLIS, use /images/ instead of /via/ in the path.

Example permalinks to HOLLIS
- Alma record https://id.lib.harvard.edu/alma/99156848468403941/catalog
- Alma record that was migrated from Aleph
- Image record
- Image component

Which link should I use for LibGuides?
Use the persistent links for LibGuides and any place the link needs to work long term.
Do I have to update my LibGuides to use persistent links?
Yes, you should update any links to HOLLIS to use persistent links. SpringShare updated around 4000 links in our LibGuides as part of the Aleph to Alma migration. They were only able to update link boxes and book boxes. You will need to update links within rich text boxes manually.
Why is this important?
Persistent links allow us to link to a Harvard Library catalog record regardless of which system we use.
