It's important to create an item record at time of cataloging. It may be a placeholder with a "dummy" barcode until end-processing is complete but it ensures that the item is requestable in the reading room. 

There are four important fields to fill out in the item record: Barcode, Material type, Item policy, and Description.

Material type

ManuscriptAlways use "Manuscript" for single items that have an associated "m" in the bibliographic record LDR byte 7. These single items can be any format: photograph or other non-projected graphic, map, music, object, etc.
Item policySpecial Collections requestable (91) 
DescriptionBox 1, Volume 1, Folder 1, etc.If the single item is going in a box, is a volume, or in a folder, please enumerate in the Description field.
