Section

Isometric Drawing, Still Image Representation

Objectives

  • Show spatial depth, project movement in space.
  • Show activity in the process of happening.
  • Show shadows, how light goes through the building.
  • Site relationship to the context, what is happening in the background, which other buildings are present, how it relates to the street.

Prerequisites

  • Set up Rhino layers
      • Set up ten different linework types
        • CUT  Heaviest lines. refers to structure and main wall being cut at about 4ft from finished ground level

        • SPATIAL  - Medium lines. linework geometry beyond the cut plane reflecting a spatial edge

        • SURFACE  - Light lines. (optional) division between co-planar geometries - for example joints on floor finishes

        • GLAZING  - Medium lines. cut line corresponding to transparent glazing

        • FURNITURE - Light lines. projected geometries of furniture below cut plane

        • PEOPLE - Light lines. projected geometries of occupants below cut plane

        • VEGETATION - Light lines. flora below cut plane

        • BELOW - Lightest lines. very light lines reflecting background context geometries beyond cut plane.

        • ABOVE - Light, dashed lines. dashed lines corresponding to significant geometries above

        • HATCH Variable lines depending on hatch type. layer to host hatch geometries

Prepare

1. Prepare the linework (

25min

0.5 Hour)

  • Cut the plan where you will draw the section and rotate
  • Add the cut line (longest line in diagram) then add the following lines
    • 1m below the line for the second linewidth (spatial)
    • 3m below that second line, add a third line for the third linewidth (surface), below that will be everything that remains in the lightest color, maybe furniture layer
    • About 3m above the cut line add two lines which generate the height of each floor, from floor below to floor above

  • Once these are added, start reporting all of the lines of the objects which intersect the cut plane line
  • Produce one construction line from the deepest part of the plan and copy along the cut line axis to go faster
  • Reproduce process for the different floors for which you have a plan
  • Lock the layer of these construction lines

2. Drawing vertical lines (

15min

0.5 Hour)

  • Do all plans at once in this fashion
  • Start drawing the lines from floor to ceiling (spatial layer)
  • Add the cut lines
  • Add the surface lines

Drawing horizontal lines (35min)

  • Add horizontal lines of handrails (create a block first)
  • Add doorways and windows (create a block first)
  • Add block furniture

    3. Populating section (0.5 Hour)

    • Create block for handrail unit
    • Add handrail unit block to section
    • Repeat above for doors / windows / furniture / other repeated architectural elements in section
    • Add stairs
    • Add hatches

    4. Updating particular spaces (

    100min)

    2 Hour)

    • Create block for individual floors
    • Repeat block for each repetitive floor
    • Assemble all individual sections together (30minfloor blocks together and adjust for permutations (0.5 Hour)
    • Refine differences between floors, atrium and public spaces (70min1.5 Hour)
      • Create the cut outline of the empty void space
      • Put everything in it as light background
      • Add a thin hatch to differentiate the zone from the others
    Image Removed
      • (optional) add light transparent hatch to differentiate continuous void spaces
      • As the void spaces are not repeated per floor, this area requires the highest level of manual drawing and should be allocated the largest amount of time

The time estimates represented in this workflow is estimated based on a specific model / input. Actual time required may vary depending on specific use scenarios.

Here the building is housing with 22 floors or about 560 beds with 60% of one bedroom, 20% of 2 bedrooms, 20% of 3-4 bedrooms.
