General note for materials coming out of manuscript collections

A special vendor code has been created to use on order records for materials coming to us from manuscript collections: XSCHMS

This code should only be used for these particular items and should NEVER be used for any orders that we are paying for in Aleph or for regular gifts that come to us from other non-manuscript sources.

Depending on whether the manuscript collection was a purchase or a gift please use the following codes for acquisition method: g (for gifts) or pc (paid for on collective record, for purchased collections)

If you are using pc please make a note on the order record mentioning that the item was paid for outside of Aleph as part of the "collection name" using manuscript funds.

Ti-Grace Atkinson

If there are manuscript notes laid in these books treat them like the items laid into Charlotte Perkins Gilman books, except that the material will be included with Ti-Grace's papers.

Sisters of Life gift (Dr. Joseph R. Stanton Human Life Issues Library and Resource Center)

Beecher-Stowe Family books

Background/Content/ Summary

The Beecher-Stowe collection (consisting of mss. and books and memorabilia) was a gift to Radcliffe from

Mr. and Mrs. Lyman Beecher Stowe in 1958. The books were accessioned. Most were not housed or shelved, but sent to HD in boxes.

Winter 2020-2021 the collection was reviewed by the curator, who made recommendations for housing fragile books in CMI boxes with a few to receive

more extensive conservation by a conservator.

Physical Processing

Books measured for CMI boxes. Once housed, the books routed to Cataloging.

Note: After cataloging updates are made, book is routed back to End Processing to have a spine title label generated for the CMI box.

Background

House as appropriate.

What to Keep & Duplicate Copies

  • General Sisters of Life books:  If Schlesinger or Harvard Library already has a copy of a book (print or electronic), do NOT add a 2nd copy. Mark as DUP (with a slip- Sisters of Life DUP) and when a Paige box is full of duplicates, give to Curator for review for donation, sale, etc.
  • VOLCOM books:  Add all VOLCOM books to Schlesinger, even if Schlesinger (or Harvard) already owns a copy(s).   However, if the VOLCOM collection contains 2 copies, keep only 1 VOLCOM copy and set aside any dups. for Curator review. If there is more than one VOLCOM copy, add to collection the one with any inscriptions for context and provenance.
  • Sisters of Life periodicals, including VOLCOM: If Schlesinger or Harvard Library already has a copy of an issue (print or electronic), do NOT add a 2nd copy; leave in a Paige box marked "Dupes" and give to Curator for review for donation, sale, etc. If the periodical is not on human life issues, leave in a Paige box marked "Not retaining" or consult with curator. If another Harvard library already owns several issues and we would only be adding a few, give to curator for donation to the Harvard library that could fill gaps.
