Starting April 13, 2020, Harvard Libraries will be implementing the use of new MARC field 914 in bib records as part of the OCLC Data Sync project.  This new field will prevent a bib from being reported to OCLC through Data Sync and will replace the use of 908 in holdings.  Houghton will adhere to this practice and discontinue the use of 908 in holdings while adding 914 to bib records moving forward.

To add 914 to bib records:

  1. While in the edit mode in MDE, add a line by pressing F8
  2. Insert 914.  As soon as you start typing in $$a, a pop-up window will appear with only one option – “NO-WORLDCAT”

3. Click on the “NO-WORLDCAT” pop-up window and it will automatically insert the phrase in 914

4. Save.

While Alma will not send records that are suppressed, Houghton will continue to add 914 to suppressed bib records to ensure consistent practice.

CAVEAT:

  • When an Alma record is updated via Search Resources or Connexion, the Alma bib field 914 will NOT be retained.
  • For example, if the Alma bib has 914, and you use Search Resources to "Copy & Merge" a newer record, the Alma bib 914 will be removed.
  • If you update the bib via Search Resources or Connexion, and you still want to prevent the record from being reported to OCLC, you will need to re-add the 914.
  • For catalogers not performing original cataloging in OCLC Connexion, future Data Sync for manuscripts only will be addressed in the next phase once OCLC data matching process for unique materials is fine-tuned.
