Many errors encountered when accessing e-resources or using other web-based library tools can be resolved by clearing the data stored in the browser, specifically cookies and cache.

How to Delete Cookies and Cache

If you are experiencing issues in more than one browser, you will need to perform this step separately in each browser that's affected.

Detect my current browser and give me instructions

Browser-specific instructions:

What Kinds of Problems Does Clearing Cookies/Cache Typically Solve?

  • "Too many redirects" or other browser errors trying to view Harvard Library e-resource or request links
  • Problem happens in the normal browser window, but page loads successfully in incognito/private mode
  • Problem happens in one browser, but not in a different browser on the same computer

What Gets Deleted when I Clear Cookies/Cache?

Cache:

Clearing the browser cache deletes saved copies of web files from pages you have visited recently. When you revisit a web page or browse multiple pages from the same website, the browser uses saved data from the cache to load the page faster. Deleting the cache forces the browser to fetch a fresh new copy of everything. Other than a slightly slower initial page load, you shouldn't notice any difference after deleting the browser cache.

Cookies:

Clearing browser cookies will cause the browser to forget any login information you have saved, including HarvardKey's "Remember me for 30 days" setting, so you will need to log in again. Other personalized settings for specific websites may also be forgotten.
