The Web was originally conceived as interlinked, static documents. Cookies, JavaScript and other advanced client-side and server-side features have quickly transformed the Web into a complex, highly dynamic software delivery environment, presenting a different reality for each user. Webrecorder, a new Web archiving tool, gives institutions, communities and individuals the power to create and present context-rich, fully interactive archives of the Web as they encounter it.
Just as the existence of Web pages is tightly linked with them being accessed and used, recalling a computational performance is required to re-enact basically any archived digital artifact. With the Web, how a Web page looks and behaves is very much dependent on the exact version of the browser used, the operating system it runs on, and maybe personalized settings. The emulation framework bwFLA offers new, structured ways of dealing with complex technical ensembles required for the performance of archived digital artifacts, establishing emulation as a viable preservation strategy.
These tools are developed and cultivated by Rhizome, a non-profit digital arts organization from New York City, represented by Ilya Kreymer, lead developer on Webrecorder, and Dragan Espenschied, Rhizome's Preservation Director. The goal of Rhizome's preservation program is to support social memory for Internet users and networked cultures through the creation of free and open source software tools that foster decentralized and vernacular archives.
