G1 YEAR
- 1st year of course work. (no incompletes allowed)
- Language study, if appropriate.
Possible Fellowship Applications: Summer Language Waiver; Graduate Society Summer Awards
Note: In order to receive summer stipends, G1s must have completed all first-year course work and one language by the third week in May.
G2 YEAR
- 2nd year of coursework.
- Complete course work by end of 2nd year.
- Complete language requirement by the end of 2nd year.
- Complete Qualifying Paper by June 1.

Note: In order to receive summer stipends, G2s must have completed the Qualifying Paper, completed all course work, and fulfilled language requirements by the third week in May.
G3 YEAR
- Begin teaching in September of 3rd year. Teaching is guaranteed for G3s.
- Take General Exams in May of 3rd year.
- Complete Dissertation Prospectus by November following generals.
Possible Fellowship Applications: Kennedy, Knox, Sheldon, Cheah, Lurcy…. (expected application by all G3s, November deadline) Summer Language Waiver; Graduate Society Summer Awards (prospectus must be completed by time of application) – January deadline.
Note: In order to receive summer stipends, G3s must have completed all course work, languages, generals by May 15.
G4 YEAR +
- Dissertation research away.
- Writing dissertation.
Possible Fellowship Applications: CASVA, Kress, Dedalus, Graham (October deadline) Grad Society/Merit Term-Time Fellowships (January deadline); Dissertation Completion Fellowship (if 2 chapters completed, January deadline.)
Note: In order to receive summer stipends, G4s must have completed all course work, languages, generals, fields, prospectus.
G5 YEAR +
- Continue teaching (unless on a term-time or completion fellowship).
- Continue writing dissertation.
- Plan to apply for other outside fellowships for support and/or dissertation completion fellowship to finish prior to G8 year.
