Past and upcoming workshops
The below series of past and upcoming workshops are sponsored by Harvard Oceanography Committee and the continued support from Prof. Eli Tziperman.
- Feb. 23, Friday, 2018, 11am, Shaler room
First workshop on “Running GCMs”:
(1) Lei spent 25 minutes to do an introduction to GCMs, and in particular CESM’s structure, basic workflow, how to modify namelists, how to control outputs, etc. (slides: AGCM_tutorial_small.pdf)
(2) Packard spent 25 minutes to introduce how to run CESM (include CAM/SPCAM) on Harvard’s Odyssey.
- March 9, Friday, 2018, 3pm, Shaler room
Second workshop on “Modifying GCMs and Post-processes”
how to set up a CESM/CAM run, how to modify namelist, as well as how to control output variables.
(1) Packard talk for 30 minutes about compiling in Linux (slides: 180309pchan-compile.pdf)
(2) Lei talk for 20 minutes about modifying the model configuration and post-processing model outputs
(3) Ned talk for 10 minutes about the some test cases’ actual outputs from his SPCAM vs. CAM runs
- March 30, Friday, 2018, noon, GeoMus 418
Third workshop on "Global atmospheric GCMs"
(1) Minmin talk about running realistic CAM and aquaplanet CAM and post-processing outputs. (slides: GCM_tutorial.pdf)
(2) Ned introduce us to the idea of ensemble simulations.
- April 6, Friday, noon, GeoMus 418
Fourth workshop on "Regional atmospheric models"
We focused on learning the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model. Lee Miller, Jiahua Guo, and Archana Dayalu will co-lead this discussion. We will start with some general introductions to WRF (what is WRF, how to use WRF in various scientific studies, etc), and we will then extend the discussions by demonstrating several specific test cases (like what we did for the CAM).
- April 20, Friday, noon, HUCE 429
Fifth workshop on "Cloud-resolving models"
This workshop will be led by our SAM experts, Duo Chan and David Wei. They will not only demonstrate how a cloud-resolving model can be configured and ran at Odyssey (with test cases for you to try), but also will give a brief introduction to the fundamentals of cloud resolving models, especially the pros and cons when compared with conventional GCMs.
- May 4, Friday, noon, GeoMus 418
Sixth workshop on "Idealized atmospheric models"
We discuss idealized atmospheric general circulation models. Specifically, our local GFDL FMS expert Feng Ding will introduce us the idea of model hierarchy and show how to run a series of simpler models on Odyssey, such as dry dynamical core, grey-radiation model, moist model with full-radiation calculation (i.e. RRTMG), as well as the idea of line-by-line calculation. Lei also talk about a simpler moist GCM.
- August 1, Wednesday, noon, GeoMus 418
Seventh workshop on "CESM hackathon"
CESM hackathon workshop by Wanying Kang. Wanying lead a hand-on tutorial on doing small modifications in CESM, including namelist changing, source code development, component set/grid choice, parallel programming tips. (Slides: cesm_hackathon.pdf)
- August 22, Wednesday, noon, GeoMus 418
Eighth workshop on "Ocean models – MITgcm"
Ocean models (e.g. MITgcm) by Xiaoting. Xiaoting gave a brief introduction to how to run a shoe-box idealized ocean experiment using MITgcm on Odyssey, with a focus on technical details of the steps to set the model up. (Slides: MITgcm_intro.pdf)
- September 4, Tuesday, noon, GeoMus 418
Nineth workshop on "Simpler models – Two-layer Quasi-Geostrophic Model"
Quasi-geostrophic models by Lei Wang. Lei gave a brief introduction to how to run an idealized two-layer quasi-geostrophic experiment to understand oceanic and atmospheric dynamics using UneQG (developed by Lei) on Odyssey, with a focus on technical details of the steps to set the model up. (Slides: QG_model_intro.pdf)
- 4/16/2019, Tuesday, 4pm, Link 269
Tenth workshop on "CESM2 on Odyssey"
Seb took us through the instructions in https://docs.google.com/document/d/1s4ak3KIId8L8MCA28zb1e8jOmImlwCyxaTe2bpArv7k/edit?usp=sharing.
