4.3 Create URNs with NRS Web Admin

You can use NRS Web Admin to create a URN to an important web resource.

After getting an NRS Admin account log into the NRS Web Admin:

Production: http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL:nrs-admin
QA: http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL:nrs-admin-qa

The Opening page of NRS Web Admin looks like this:

Click on the Create link next to the Search link:

On the main menu, select Names/URLs, and then Add.

Click the Select button to select the urn-3 namespace.

Select the authority path to which the persistent identifier will belong. On the drop-down list, select the appropriate authority path and click the Select button.

In the example below, the authority path HUL.OIS has been selected.

If you do not know the appropriate authority path, contact your local NRS Administrator. Consult the NRS Status page to identify you local NRS Administrator.

In the Resource name field, enter your choice for resource name. See Resource name format for more about forming a resource name.

Note: To work in a browser, the persistent identifier and its associated URL most both have an "active" status.

For Status, click Active to create an active PID. In the URL field, enter the URL to the digital object.

For URL status click Active.

Click the Add button to finish this process and create the persistent identifier.

In the example below, the user has elected to have NRS assign a unique numeric value for the resource name by entering the URN mask field {n}.

In the final step, NRS Web Admin displays information about your new persistent identifier.

In the example below, the new PID is urn-3:HUL.OIS:22414.

The new persistent identifier will be actionable (can be used in a browser) when you prepend the NRS address http://nrs.harvard.edu/. The full working URL to the PID created in the example above would be:

http://nrs.harvard.edu/ urn-3:HUL.OIS:22414

(If you are working with the QA/test version of the NRS Web Admin, use the NRS address http:// nrstest.harvard.edu/ instead.)

Note: new or updated PIDs are passed to the NRS name resolution server each night. An "active" PID created today will work in a browser tomorrow.
