Clippings
Sorting
Depending on the volume and condition of the clippings, sort as follows:
Keep enclosed clippings together with the item. Use acid-free Permalife paper correctly sized for the folder (provided by the Manuscript End-processing Assistant) to interleave clippings or make photocopies, if the condition is fragile. It is Houghton practice not to make photocopies of clippings, but exceptions can be made. Consult curator as needed.
If clippings are photocopied, originals can be discarded.
Depending on the extent, clippings might be arranged as a separate series. If the collection has been arranged by the donor or during accessioning, keep the clippings in the arranged order.
Clippings are usually arranged chronologically. In some instances, they can be arranged by subject (see for example, Gore Vidal Papers).
Duplicates of clippings are typically discarded, however it is always advisable to consult curator before doing so.
