When importing ASC files from ArcMap into Rhino, it is important to utilize a reasonable density in the point cloud that is used to determine the mesh. Import options will ask you to select a "step size" wherein a step size of one (=1) will import EVERY point. It is detrimental to the process to import every point. Determine the density of points you'll actually need, considering that you will be scaling the point cloud/mesh in rhino in order to reduce it to the scale of the model.
