[HSCI] Introduction to R workshop

Introduction to R workshop (January 24 - 25, 2017)

Description:

This 2 day hands-on workshop will introduce participants to using R and RStudio. R is a simple programming environment that enables the effective handling of data, while providing excellent graphical support.

During this workshop, participants will learn about:

  •    R syntax: Understanding the different 'parts of speech' in R; introducing variables and functions, demonstrating how functions work and modifying arguments for specific use cases.
  •    Data structures in RGetting a handle on the classes of data structures and the types of data used by R.
  •    Inspecting and manipulating data: Reading in data from files. Using indexes and various functions to subset, merge and create datasets.
  •    Making plots to visualize dataVisualizing data using plotting functions in base R as well as from external packages such as ggplot2.
  •    Exporting data and graphicsGenerating new data tables and plots for use outside of the R environment.

In addition to the above, we will focus on good data management practices, installing and working with data packages from various sources, and the different ways to get help when coding in R. After this workshop participants can expect to be comfortable with the basics of data manipulation and plotting using R.

NOTE: This R workshop is a prerequisite for a free 1-day workshop on "Using R for Differential Gene Expression Analysis" on February 15th, 2017.

Please check the eligibility requirements below prior to registering.

Registration is now closed

Who should attend?

Harvard researchers who are affiliated with the Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI) and want to learn:

  • how to use the R environment to increase their efficiency for data analysis
  • how to plot data visualizations using R
  • good data management practices

Schedule:
