Plan

Isometric Drawing, Still Image Representation

Objectives

  • Show proportion, circulation through openings and stairs
  • Linework differentiation to display levels of importance, depends if the project is architectural or landscape

Prerequisites

  • Define drawing dimensions, scale, and level of detail
  • Define the working boundaries
    • Can be the boundaries of the site
    • The building
    • The permissible constructive limits

  • Define working grid
    • Set up a grid using "ArrayCrv" inside the defined boundaries, this will facilitate the design.

        • Autonomous base grid for example 3x3ft grid
        • In relationship to an imagined structure or rythm of spacing, e.g. AABBAA
        • Set a work grid in relationship to an existing structure (if adaptive reuse)

  • Set up Rhino layers
      • Set up ten different linework types
        • Cut Heaviest lines. refers to structure and main wall being cut at about 4ft from finished ground level

        • Spatial  - Medium lines. linework geometry beyond the cut plane reflecting a spatial edge

        • Surface  - Light lines. (optional) division between co-planar geometries - for example joints on floor finishes

        • Glazing  - Medium lines. cut line corresponding to transparent glazing

        • Furniture - Light lines. projected geometries of furniture below cut plane

        • People - Light lines. projected geometries of occupants below cut plane

        • Vegetation - Light lines. flora below cut plane

        • Below - Lightest lines. very light lines reflecting background context geometries beyond cut plane.

        • Above - Light, dashed lines. dashed lines corresponding to significant geometries above

        • Hatch Variable lines depending on hatch type. layer to host hatch geometries

Limitations & Disclaimer

The time estimates represented in this workflow is estimated based on a specific model / input. Actual time required may vary depending on specific use scenarios.

The time estimates here are for drawing a plan for 5-6 2BR housing units or about 1,500 - 2,000 SF.

Contents

Steps
Time
0Setup0.5 Hour
1Draw borders of each unit0.5 Hour
2Add mullions and windows0.25 Hour
3Add doors and furniture1.5 Hours
4Clean wall lines and add hatches0.5 Hour

Estimated Total Time: 3.25 Hours

1. Draw the borders of each unit (0.5 hour)

    • Draw the centerline of the walls separating units based on the grid - 10min
    • Set the wall thicknesses  (e.g. 240mm) and OFFSET, toggle Cap and Both Sides (e.g. the 120mm) - 5min
    • Another methodology
      • CURVEBOOLEANinside the grid directly, toggle CombineRegions=No
      • OFFSETMULTIPLE click inside one of the regions
      • Delete the original curveBoolean line to get just the walls

2. Add the mullions and windows (0.25 hour)

    • Draw all of the mullions
    • Draw the window lines
    • Offset the window lines and cap to get the above dash
    • Add all of the terrasses and handrails if any

3. Add doors and furniture (1.5 hour)

    • Reuse existing furniture blocks
    • Add doors
      • Reuse existing block for doors
      • Set in position all the doors
    • Place roughly inside the walls
      • Place the bathroom and kitchen furniture for each unit
      • Add the large items: tables, couch, bed…
      • Finish with the chairs, objects, lights
    • Once everything is placed, use ALIGN to fix on walls
    • For repetitive units, you can BLOCK the whole unit

4. Clean the the wall lines and add hatches (0.5 hour)

    • Select all of the walls, doors and windows, TRIM the openings
    • Select all CUT lines in the plan, type CURVEBOOLEAN, toggle all regions and Delete All
    • Add hatches
      • Choose HATCH layer
      • CURVEBOOLEAN all of the areas of interest, toggle Delete None
