When to record a name as subordinate

  • The name includes a term that by definition implies the body is part of another (11.2.2.14.1)
  • The name includes a term that normally implies subordination and the name of the higher body is needed for identification of the lower (11.2.2.14.2)
  • The name is general in nature (it has no distinctive proper nouns, adjectives, or subject words) or only indicates geography, chronology, letter, or number (11.2.2.14.3)
  • The name does not convey the idea of corporate body and does not contain the name of the higher body (11.2.2.14.4)
  • The name is school-related and only indicates a field of study (11.2.2.14.5)
  • The name includes the entire preferred name of a higher body (11.2.2.14.6)

When to make additions to a preferred name

  • If the name does not convey the idea of corporate body (11.13.1.1), then add:
    • Type of corporate body (11.13.1.2) or
    • Other designation (11.13.1.7) 
  • If you need to break a conflict (11.13.1.1) , then add in this order of priority:
    • Type of corporate body (11.13.1.2) 
    • Place associated (11.13.1.3)
    • Associated institution (11.13.1.4)
    • Date associated (11.13.1.5)
    • Type of jurisdiction (11.13.1.6)
    • Other designation (11.13.1.7)
  • If the addition would assist in identification, you may opt to add:
    • Place associated (11.13.1.3)
    • Associated institution (11.13.1.4)
    • Date associated (11.13.1.5)
