Other Classification Schemes - Obsolete (reference page only)
** STARTING FY22, THE RARE BOOK SECTION WILL IMPLEMENT USING ACCESSION NUMBERS AS CALL NUMBERS AND WILL NO LONGER CLASSIFY ITEMS AS OUTLINED BELOW. **
Individual Collections
In addition to the preceding main classification scheme, certain special collections have individual schemes as described below; see Houghton's collection code document for those that belong in subfield "c" of the 852.
B | Bibliography, book collecting, public & private library catalogs, manuscript catalogs, auction catalogs, etc. This is the only Widener classification that has been retained for Houghton. The classification scheme is contained in a separate schedule. In recent years Houghton has departed from the Widener method of assigning dot numbers following the initial classification number: generally, the first dot number is assigned from the 800 numbering scheme (see Alphabetic Numbering Table) based on the main entry, with additional dot numbers as needed. Consult the shelf list for guidance. |
Bible | Used for Bibles if it does not seem desirable to classify them under an editor or translator, or to put them in a collection such as STC or Typ. See separate schedule. |
EDR | Used for books with fixed shelf locations in the Emily Dickinson Room. |
Film E | Used for reels of STC microfilm. Numbers assigned in sequence. |
HEW | Used for books with fixed shelf locations in the Harry Elkins Widener Memorial Room. |
Horblit Ref | Used for Horblit Collection reference books (Dept. of Printing & Graphic Arts). Numbers assigned in sequence, with no attempt at classification. |
TS | Used for reference books shelved in the Technical Services Department, both on the Mezzanine and on the 2nd floor. Historically, no number was assigned. Now one finds both old class numbers and LC call numbers in use. |
HRef | Used for reference books (primarily for the Dept. of Printing & Graphic Arts). Numbers assigned in sequence, with no attempt at classification. |
HRR | NOTE: Obsolete as of 3/1/2007. Previously used for reference books shelved in the Reading Room. The classification scheme is contained in a separate schedule. |
Hyde | Used for books in the Donald and Mary Hyde Collection of Dr. Samuel Johnson. |
Inc | Used for incunabula. The numbers used are those assigned by Proctor, with dot numbers for those not recorded by him. The size designation "F" is not used; instead, folio incunabula are assigned specific case/shelf locations in the exhibition room. Incunabula shelved elsewhere receive the appropriate size designation according to the Typ classification scheme. |
Lin | Used for books in the Lincoln Collection. The numbers to be used are those that were assigned when the collection was first received; in general, no additions or changes are to be made in this collection. |
[MRH | Formerly used to classify a few maps in the Houghton Map Room (Lamont), e.g. MRH N.1. The numbers represent fixed shelf locations. Do not use in future.] |
MS | It is occasionally necessary or desirable to shelve printed books with manuscripts; in such instances, the call numbers are assigned by the Manuscript Dept. |
MS Facs | Used for facsimiles of manuscripts. Numbers assigned in sequence, with no attempt at classification. |
MS Ref. | Used for reference books shelved in the Manuscript Dept. Numbers assigned in sequence, with no attempt at classification. |
Mus | Used for music scores. This is a strictly alphabetical class, with no differentiation by nationality or period. See separate schedule. |
Phot | Used for books illustrated with original mounted photographs. (See also TypPh and Horblit TypPh classes.) See separate schedule. |
RRL | Russian Revolutionary Literature collection (stored at HD). Numbers assigned in reel no/item no. sequence, per Russian revolutionary literature collection … compiled by Kenneth E. Carpenter (New Haven, 1976). |
STC | Used for books printed in Britain, and English books printed abroad before 1641; numbers assigned in accordance with the Short Title Catalogue (2nd ed.). |
TS | Used for many rare books in the Harvard Theatre Collection. See separate schedule. |
WKR | Used for books with fixed shelf locations in the W.K. Richardson Room. |
Three collections, classified according to the main Houghton scheme, have descriptive names prefixed:[new Hyde Collection acquisitions will also be treated this way]
Keats | The Keats collection, shelved in the Keats Room. |
Lowell | The library of Amy Lowell, shelved in the Lowell Room. |
Wisdom | The William B. Wisdom collection of Thomas Wolfe, shelved in its proper place in the AC9 collection. |
Three collections of early botanical and zoological books have been deposited in Houghton. These collections are shelved alphabetically with the following call numbers:
Arnold Arb. | Gray Herb. | Zool. Mus. |
[Note: These collections were returned to their owners May 2006. Any records found so marked should be corrected.]
