VIII.1. Houghton Library Size Designations
** STARTING FY22, THE RARE BOOK SECTION WILL IMPLEMENT USING ACCESSION NUMBERS AS CALL NUMBERS AND WILL NO LONGER CLASSIFY ITEMS. **
SIZE DESIGNATION (used in 852 $c as sub-location) - This is a general guideline for RBS only
Books
GEN | Up to 28 cm |
GENHRZ | Up to 28 cm (requiring horizontal shelving) |
F | Folio books measuring more than 28 cm. |
M | Miniature books measuring no more than 10 cm. [N.B. Also notate box and section number in $m after the call number - boxes are kept in basement.] |
PF | Large portfolios (more than 46 cm). |
PFHRZ | Large portfolios (requiring horizontal shelving). |
N.B. If an item measuring under 28 cm is placed into a prefab, CMI, or cloth case, and the overall height is increased to over 28 cm, remember to designate the item as a folio.
Broadsides and Flat files
PPF | Flat files - P1 Case range full drawer (folder size 28"x38" (71x96 cm); some exceptions can be made to sizes up to 34"x45" (86x114 cm)) |
PFD | Flat files - P1 Case range half drawer (folder size 18"x24" (45x61 cm) and 11"x15" (28x38cm)) |
See Acquisitions and Accessioning wiki on Broadsides and Flat Files for other size information.
N.B. Any item cataloged by RBS should receive the new accession number scheme (that includes older acquisitions being cataloged now for the first time). In addition, do not assign MS call number to broadsides or other ephemera cataloged by RBS.
N.B. Catalogers should not change the sub-location of items that are heading to HD storage; this designation will be changed by the end-processor in end-processing.
HISTORICAL REFERENCE:
Under the previous local classification scheme, certain preliminary lower-case letters were used before the asterisk and the first letter of the first element of the call number when the size of the book being cataloged falls outside the limits of from 6 to 28 centimeters (top to bottom binding measurement).
The following codes were designated for flat files for various collections under the previous classification scheme:
b | Use for small broadsides. |
bx | Use for items in non-standard boxes, e.g. postcards). |
(horz) | Add at the end of the call number for items shelved flat. |
pf | Use for large portfolios. |
p | Use for large broadsides. |
pp | Use for oversize broadsides. |
PF Cabinet | Use for items shelved in large metal flat file. |
For the main Houghton author class under the previous local classification scheme, the b to indicate broadsides was applied internally, to the second digit of the first part of the call number (e.g., AB85 replaces AC85). For other classification schemes, the b preceded the call number.
Typ size designations:
When required, the call number was preceded by F for folio books or PF for portfolio books (note: P was formerly used for PF). Miniature books were preceded by M; broadsides or flat items by A, B, P, or PP, according to size.
