  • Leaves cannot be separated or turned without causing damage to itself or neighboring leaves

Inflexible leaves

  • Brittle paper or supports 
  • Text block with inflexible binding structure 
  • Repairs or book structure which causdamage with use 

Actively detaching media or image layer  

  • Cracked, flaking photographs 

  • Actively detaching pigment 

  • Look carefully at enclosure (folder, window mat, box) for pigment fragments  

  • Look closely at painted areas for lifting or flaking pigments 

Fasteners & adhesives 

Leaves stuck or fused together 

  • Random adhesives or other accretions 

  • Pressure sensitive tape with adhesive creeping out from edges 

  • Media (inks, paints, etc.) may have been reactivated (humidity, liquid) 

Paper clips, brads, staples, string, ribbon and other fasteners will not be removed

Formats 

Folded parchment documents which do not open easily 

  • If parchment makes noises (popping or cracking sounds), please stop handling and consult on Tele-Assess 

Rolled panorama photographs and scrolls

  • Often includes parchment bindings over boards.  Begin imaging work carefully, with particular attention paid to binding at joints.  Stop if you hear popping or cracking.  

  • Stitched rather than sewn text blocks (staples, stab sewing, over sewing) 

Specific photographic processes
