Best Practice for Foreign Language Summaries in Bibliographic Records

When encountering foreign-language summaries in English-language monographic bibliographic records in OCLC Connexion, Metadata Standards Working Group and the ITS Metadata Creation managers recommend that catalogers retain these summaries, prefacing the summary with the statement:

[Name of language] summary:

This summary should be in MARC field 520 with a first indicator of 8 (catalogers should move this information from a 500 if it is found there).  Use of the indicator 8 removes the now redundant text "Summary" from the display label.

Exception: This best practice should not be used for serials cataloging. Instead, serials catalogers should follow CCM 13.9.6 and change foreign language summaries to English.

Background

Some vendors include summaries in English-language bibliographic records that are not in English.  While not all patrons will understand this summary, it seems likely that the users of the materials may find this summary useful.
