Updating read-only settings in Macro Express

Updating read-only settings

Before opening and using any of the files in the Houghton Macros folder, you must update your read-only settings in Macro Express.

1. Open Macro Express Explorer (i.e., double click on the red M icon in your system tray), if it is not already open

2. Select “Options”, then “Preferences” from the menu bar

3. Click on “File System”

4. Click on the “Read Only Prompt” tab

5. Uncheck the “Prompt about read-only status on macro files” box

6. Select “Leave the file as is”

Once your settings look like this, continue to the next step.

7. Click “OK”

8. Close Macro Express Explorer

Read-only error messages

Books.mex is a read-only file. If you try to open or edit the file, you will receive one of the following error messages or prompts.

Read-only error

If you updated your Macro Express read-only settings according to the instructions above and attempt to open or edit the Books file, you will see this error message:

Click "OK". You will not be allowed to edit the file, and there is nothing that you need to do.

Read-only flag

If you have not updated your read-only settings, you may see this prompt:

Select "Leave the file as is" and click "OK" or click "Cancel". Update your Macro Express settings according to the instructions above. DO NOT select "Turn off the read-only flag"; that option will unlock the file for general editing.

If you see other error messages or have problems running macros from the shared file, please notify Houghton's Macro Express liaison.
