XI.2. Graphic Material
(DO NOT FOLLOW - REVISION TO THE ENTIRE CATALOGING SECTION IN PROGRESS)
Historically, graphic material (prints, posters, drawings, paintings, photographs, etc.) has been cataloged in a variety of ways. Before OASIS and VIA, everything was cataloged into HOLLIS. Now, more and more material is being entered into the other two databases, but there is no systematic approach to choosing. The treatment of most items is done on a case-by-case basis in a conversation between the curator of the material and Technical Services.
Cataloging rules should conform to the choice of cataloging standard. Material for which the Rare Books Team is responsible is entered into HOLLIS, using AACR2(rev) and such supplemental standards as DCRM(B) and Betz' Graphic Materials (available through Catalogers' Desktop). Material may be cataloged individually or at the collection-level.
Classification varies depending on the material being cataloged. If printed material, it is classed as a broadside. Original artwork is treated on a case-by-case basis, with the exception of that which is bought for the Department of Printing & Graphic Arts. In this case, it is classed in the TypDr scheme. (See Classification Guide for details.) This is followed by a size designation:
39 x 31 cm. | The smallest size (would be Sz 1) is left without size designation. |
49 x 38 cm. | Sz2 |
59 x 43 cm. | Sz3 |
74 x 59 cm. | Sz4 |
