On the Waterfront
On the Waterfront
Blumfeld, attorney for the United Importers Association, Inc., an organization of merchants who import produce from abroad, testified before the Commissioner of Investigation that a member of the association had retained him in an effort to work out certain problems he was having on the waterfront with racketeers trying to extort protection money from the importers. In response to questioning, Blumfeld also testified that this anonymous member told him that he had learned that two powerful city politicians were involved in the protection racket and shared in its proceeds. The Commissioner asked the name of the member. Blumfeld refused to give it on grounds of lawyer-client privilege and was cited for contempt. On appeal, what ruling and why?
