Checking the Condition of an Item

Material going to the lab must be sturdy and able to withstand the pressure of the scanners. To determine if an object is a candidate for this service, please use the criteria below to evaluate it.

Does it fit within 15” x 23”?

If it is a codex, examine the volume:

  • Can it open 180°?
  • If it does not open all the way, does it open 140°? Does the gutter measure at least a ¼ inch on each side?
  • Are the covers and the binding sturdy?
  • Are the papers brittle?
  • Is the object held together by brads?

If it contains loose sheets, look through the folder:

  • Are the pages brittle?
  • Are they in order?
  • Is the folder missing any items?
  • Are there staples or paper clips?

To determine if the condition issues can be treated, view the Conservation Guidelines.

If condition and/or size do not allow for material to go through the lab workflow, discuss alternatives:

  • Studio work.
  • Taking photos in the Reading Room.
