PART I:  OVERVIEW

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:

Constance Fern Parvey, daughter of William Robert Parvey and Anna Katherine Dunkel, was born in Aberdeen South Dakota, on January 12, 1931.  She earned her B.A. in sociology and psychology from the University of Minnesota in 1952 and, her B.D. from the Harvard Divinity School in 1963; she received an honorary doctorate from the University of Redlands (California) in 1977.  Parvey was in the first class of women to be admitted to the Harvard Divinity School in 1955 and in 1972, was the first woman to be ordained in the New England Synod of the Lutheran Church in America (known today as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America).  From 1978-1982, Parvey served on the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches where she directed the Study on the Community of Women and Men in the Church (a study on the roles of women in churches around the world); she published a landmark report on her findings in 1983.  Parvey was also editor of the Harvard Divinity Bulletin; executive producer of a series of television programs on urban life for KCTA-TV in Minneapolis and St. Paul; author of three books; guest preacher and lecturer for several colleges and universities; served as pastor and chaplain; and was on numerous professional committees, councils, and boards.  Constance F. Parvey died on May 21, 2011 at the age of 80.  The following chronology highlights a few of her professional accomplishments.

ACCESSION INFORMATION:

MC 754; T-453; MP-065:  is comprised of accession numbers 2009-M104 and 2001-M116.  There are 42 cartons, a 1/2 half file box, 2 folio+ boxes, 1 folio folder, and 1 oversize folder.  The collection is approximately 47.64 linear feet [11 cartons (letter); 31 cartons (legal); ½ file box; 2 folio+ boxes] plus 1 folio folder, 1 oversize folder, 17 audiotapes, 1 motion picture reel, and 1 microfilm reel.

 

PROVENANCE:

  • The papers of Constance F. Parvey were donated in 2009-2011 by Constance F. Parvey (assisted by Ann Braude – Harvard Divinity School).  There is a signed DOG dated May 27, 2009; a HOLLIS record for accession 2009-M104; a file in the 4th floor lateral files for accession 2009-M104 containing correspondence, biographical material, and a brief outline of box contents; a listing in AC/DC tracker for 17 audiotapes (T-453), 1 motion picture reel (MP-065), and 1 microfilm reel (MP-065); and donor correspondence.

CONTENTS:

The collection contains material from Parvey’s life-long ministerial work as a Lutheran pastor.  Included are her directorship work files with the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches on the Study on the Community of Women and Men in the Church, her chaplaincy work files from MIT, her pastoral work files from Good Shepherd Church (VT), her writings and sermons (including drafts), her diaries/journals/notebooks, correspondence, publications, resource and planning materials, and biographical material (i.e., CVs, clippings, cards, etc.).  The files are intermixed with certificates & diplomas; clippings; committee material; conference material; contact lists; correspondence; CVs; diaries, journals, & notebooks; financial records; flyers & pamphlets; lecture files; newsletters; notes; objects & textiles; oversize material; photo albums; photographs; planning material; publications; reports; resource material; rolodexes; scrapbooks; sermons w/ drafts; writings w/ drafts; and personal/sensitive material (i.e., insurance material, student files, etc.).  Also included are A/V materials (audiotapes, a motion picture reel, and a microfilm reel).

APPRAISAL INFORMATION:

  • The collection contains the papers of Constance F. Parvey from roughly 1977-2002.  The contents of the cartons break down as follows:
    • World Council of Churches material (17 cartons)
    • Writings and sermons (7 cartons)
    • MIT material (4 cartons)
    • Photographic material and scrapbooks (3 cartons)
    • Correspondence, CVs, etc. (2 cartons)
    • Diaries, journals, and notebooks (2 cartons)
    • Good Shepherd Church material (1 carton)
    • Rolodexes (1 carton)
    • Misc./mixed files (files that need to be sorted) (5 cartons)
  • Overall, the materials look to be in good condition with little preservation attention required – some fragile papers and clippings will require photocopying.
  • Boxes contain file folders and binders with paper records; bound books and publications; spiral bound notebooks and journals; photo albums; scrapbooks; folders of loose photographs; and loose objects and textiles.
  • The paper records are housed in a variety of folders (i.e., hanging folders, manila folders, two-pocket folders, etc.); some folder titles exist; most of the papers are neatly filed but, there are folders with folded papers, papers in envelopes, papers that are stapled and paper clipped, and most folders are overstuffed.
  • A/V material is also in good condition and labeled.
  • There is a box containing several rolodexes.
  • Oversize material is housed in the folio folder, oversize folder, and the two folio+ boxes (there are also a few books in the folio+ boxes).
  • Objects and textiles are scattered throughout.

 

PART III:  PROCESSING PLAN

OUTLINE:

  • Boxes need to be sorted into the preliminary arrangement scheme (done)
  • Boxes containing the misc./mixed files need to be sorted and filed into the preliminary arrangement scheme [Processor]
  • Files within the preliminary arrangement scheme need to be clearly identified by content, reviewed, weeded, re-foldered, assigned folder titles, and flagged accordingly [Processor]
