Harvard University PressRachel Field

sent PDF Dec 11, 2021
got acknowledgement Dec 12, non-committal. Seems minimal interest.

Got a more friendly email on Dec 22, trying to arrange a zoom call
Jan 5: had a zoom call w Rachel Field. She was guarded but positive.
In order to proceed she wants an outline style summary of each chapter with main take-aways clearly defined.
Wants more examples and analysis of failures from multiple disciplines
Thinks it will fall in their educational line
She said they provide substantial editing and copy-editing support. They use WORD.
She asked how many figures, didn't even ask about any equations.
B&W figures only
Action is on me to send outline materials, if we are going to move to next step. What I sent is not suitable for circulation  to her team.

Oxford University PressSonke Adlung

sent form-based web inquiry on Dec 11, prepared cover letter in Book2021 folder.
He replied 12/11 and so sent letter and PDF to him directly.

" I wonder whether you could slightly reformat the first document (attached) with the first page becoming a Draft Preface, followed by the TOC and your CV. We could then use it in our approach to the referees as your proposal (as it stands, it’s written as a letter to the publisher), supplemented by the current draft of your manuscript."

She responded with friendly email on Dec 12 and asked for a sample, sent her the PDF

sent email and letter and PDF.
No response as of Dec 12.
Got a reply Dec 22 saying he'd be in touch in 2022
Arranged zoom call for Jan 6

Jan 6- great discussion with Jeremy. He was past book review editor for physics today. MIT press has a mechanism for making hardcopy book but also free distibution of electronic version. Sounds perfect! Jeremy would do structural editing then separate copy editor. Strong preference for B&W figures. They prefer to use Word. They get rights for 3-5 years then reverts to me.

meeting bookedsigned contract.

Questions for Publishers:

1) retain rights?
2) editorial and proof-reading assistance?
3) promotion and visibility vs. self-publishing. Goal is to reach readership.
4) sample contract?
5) title options-

Self-publishing:

KDP on Amazon seems decent.
Choosing categories and keywords is important.

Science & Math  > Physics (and others, esp. Instruments)
Science & Math > Technology
Science & Math > Essays and Commentary

Business & Money > Management * Leadership > Project Management > Technical

To Do:

  • revisit JWST aspect
  • remove NYT figure
  • read CISP report 2021 (in Book2021 folder)
  • cover art
  • Have Peter Gailson read it. Also David Kaiser at MIT physics (Ash Carter session)
  • references to add:
