HGL Database Scope

Database contents

The HGL data collections fall into three categories:

  • Published data sets documented in the catalog and available for download from HGL.
  • Published data sets documented in the catalog and available for download from other sources.
  • Harvard researcher-created data sets documented in the catalog and downloadable.

The contents of HGL can be split into two parts: the contents of the catalog and the contents of the repository. Any data contained in the repository must also be listed in the catalog. Also, it must be licensed to all Harvard University affiliates, or in the public domain. If the licensing does not provide for university-wide access, it cannot be included. Data in the repository must be GIS-ready, in that it must have both spatial and tabular components. Data that is in tabular form only, without any corresponding shapes, will not be included.

The HGL Catalog contains records for items available for use by Harvard affiliates other than the owner. If a data set is licensed to an individual, the data set will not be included in the catalog.

Consult the HGL help pages for more information about collection content.

Contributors

The Harvard Map Collection of the Harvard Library holds the largest collection of GIS-ready data on campus and is the largest contributor of data to the HGL repository. Other contributors of data include the Harvard-Yenching Institute and the Graduate School of Design. At this time, Map Collection staff are solely responsible for processing and depositing the metadata or "cataloging" that describes data added to the HGL repository. Metadata describing data held by other organizations is created by those groups.
