Harvard Geospatial Library 4.0

Project Overview

Harvard Geospatial Library (HGL) enables researchers to discover and easily access the wealth of geospatial data sets from around the world held at Harvard Library. Continuing the long-standing partnership between Library Technology Services, the Harvard Map Collection, HL Information and Technical Services and the Harvard Geospatial Working Group, teams across Harvard Library are now engaged in an update to HGL that will improve, refine and build upon the geospatial data repository that will serve the scholarly community better for years to come.

In brief, the project’s goals are to:

  • Replace HGL’s discovery and access layer
  • Streamline the process through which geospatial data is deposited and shared with other systems
  • Create a framework and service model that supports data ingest and discovery from sources beyond the Library, such as Dataverse
  • Become an active participant in the GeoBlacklight community of open-source geospatial data discovery software developers
