DRS Storage Refresh (Phase 1) - Cutover Timeline
- April 2021 - March 2022 - DRS storage refresh project, phase 1 development work
Build new DRS storage infrastructure; develop new policy-driven storage classifications; migrate existing DRS content to new storage; update all DRS services to work with new storage.
- Tue March 8 2022- Start cutover of delivery applications to use new storage
All delivery applications (IDS, PDS, SDS audio/video, file delivery and full text search) will start pulling DRS content from a new delivery storage framework. These changes will be largely invisible to end users but there are some temporary impacts.
Impacts: - Delayed availability of new deposits: Deposits to new preservation storage will be available within minutes as usual but it will take up to 24 hours for new deliverable content to become available through delivery services. LTS is working on shortening this time lag, but going forward depositors will get the successful DRS deposit email, which is still accurate, before files are available for delivery.
- MP3 audio files will stream without embedded descriptions: MP3 files delivered through the Streaming Delivery Service (SDS) will not display title and other descriptive information that is embedded in the files. Display of information from playlists and for video files will not change.
- Fri April 22 - Freeze on DRS deposits and updates begins at 5pm
From March 18-27, all deposits and updates will stop to allow the cutover of DRS services to new preservation storage. The DRS batch loader and Web Admin will be offline in this timeframe so please plan accordingly. DRS delivery services will run on their regular schedule.
- Fri March 18 - Sun May 1 - Cutover of all remaining DRS services to use new storage
LTS will use these nine days to re-point DRS to use new preservation storage, cut over to new DRS software that can interact with new storage, and perform final tests of batch deposits and updates to ensure all work in harmony.
- Mon May 2 - All DRS and delivery services return to regular service
Regular batch deposit operations and Web Admin access resume.
Impacts: - New Batch Builder client is released to allow for setting storage dispositions manually.
- DRS ingest services will assign default storage dispositions, i.e. which files are for delivery and which are only for preservation storage.
- May 2022 - ?? - Phase 2 development work
- Populate a new asset delivery infrastructure (the Media Presentation Service - MPS) with DRS object and file metadata. MPS will generate IIIF manifests with this metadata.
- Cut over DRS delivery services to use MPS.
- Enhancements to DRS storage class handling.
- Improved DRS support for ingest of sensitive content.
- DRS content model enhancements.
- Remedy for MP3 audio display of descriptive metadata.
