CI01 Detailed Descriptions
CI01 - Photogrammetry (Objects suitable for 3D rendering) ^
By systematically photographing an object, from multiple angles and elevations, Imaging Services can create 3D representations that can be examined and manipulated using an interactive viewer. These 3D models are currently delivered online via sketchfab.com. The image files used to create the model, and a variety of derivative file types created by the model-generation software (i.e., OBJ, X3D, MTL, GLB), are preserved as datasets so others can regenerate the models, if needed. Example: “2022, Deelfontein - M1066A, Harvard Dataverse, V1”.
Service eligibility
- The model must be used in a Harvard course or used to support a specified research initiative.
- Requestors must explain how academically relevant features are spread across three spatial dimensions, and therefore static photographs of the item would not satisfy pedagogical requirements.
- A Harvard Library sponsor agrees to catalog the model and steward the model as an enduring library resource.
- The Harvard Library must be allowed to make the models accessible online, without restriction.
- Model subjects must have material properties allowing for photogrammetry and be transportable to Imaging Services where lighting conditions can be carefully controlled.
- A funding mechanism must be identified to support the model’s creation.
Deliverables, pricing, and restrictions
- Our 3D models are typically delivered online via sketchfab.com. The photographs used to create the model, and a variety of derivative file types (i.e., OBJ, X3D, MTL, GLB) created by the model-generation software, are preserved as datasets so others can recreate the models if needed.
- Hourly fee, $70/hr. Recorded in Imaging Services’ order tracking system, where the customer, services, and fees are recorded. Bill monthly as we do with other project works.
