LSST PST

LSST PST

List of PST issues:

  • shutter overhead
  • fixed exposure times or fixed m5?
  • scheduler optimization
  • Cadence workshop planning
  • readout rate vs. noise and crosstalk.
  • commissioning camera early use
  • making things available: LSST algorithms, detectors on loan, etc.
  • adaptive scheduler?
    • install SLR-cam now?
  • mean time between closing on second pair and opening on next on next pointing is 6.5 sec.
  • obs to potential time is 54.7%.
  • 73% of observing is spent with shutter open.
  • 120 seconds for filter change
  • about 8 -9 filter changes per night
  • review flat-fielding plan
  • beam footprint at shutter is 70mm

opsim issues:

  • sky brightness does not include scattered moonlight
  • no adaptive observing
  • phone-book approach to asteroids
  • shape metric (higher dependence on PSF than m5)
  • half-step or full step slews?
  • add CNP field for atmospheric calibration
  • do zenith-dependent exposures?
  • do Galactic-extinction-corrected exposures?
  • test raft and chip dropouts, impact on performance metrics

CWS todo:

  • put Andy Connolly in touch with Ken Chambers and JT regarding PS-1 scheduling.
  • install all-sky camera in Illinois house at Pachon.
  • advocate for more realistic y band sky variation
  • consider taking full advantage of 4 second slew minimum.
  • long darks to Lupton for cosmic ray rates
  • write up the merit for shorter exposures: Sne at 10th and Galactic structure and discovery space. Go from 5 sec minimum to 0.1 sec minimum. Fallback to 1 sec.
  • talk with Martin about faster shutter transit times and also short exposure with 0.1 sec between blades.
  • talk with J about finalizing the benefits of looser vertical specs
