This paper blends IR and optical observations, and contains many of the points we discussed today:

this one discusses getting stellar mass estimates, in section 4.1:

equation 1 claims to extract stellar mass from a single WISE color! That means we don't need to know distance in order to estimate stellar mass.

And here is a (I think more readable) paper that does photo-z estimates:
