Alma location codes - usage information

About this page

Each library has its own set of location codes in Alma. Each library maintains information on the appropriate use of those locations for that library. This page lists some specific codes that should only be used in the manner described.

FIG For additional information see "FIG holdings in Alma" at Google and HathiTrust Discovery and Data Maintenance	HATHI	Used for material digitized as part of the Google Books project that has been ingested by HathiTrust. Users are pointed to Hathi for delivery.
	DEMOTED	Use this when there is also a NET holding with a preferred digitization. The FIG holding will be suppressed from public display, and only the NET link(s) will be used in HOLLIS. Do not suppress individual FIG holdings. All holdings in the DEMOTED location are suppressed via a system configuration.
	DEMOTED-HT	Same as above but used when holding was FIG HATHI (vs FIG GEN/GOOGLE). This is a temporary solution as we change FIG holdings to point to Hathi instead of Google.
	METADATA	Item was scanned but is not available in full view. There is no preview of any kind in Google or Hathi. Status may be due to poor OCR or other issues, some of which may be resolved during periodic re-processing of images.
	SNIPPET	Item was scanned but is not available in full view. If viewed in Google, you can see "snippets" of the work (i.e. a few sentences in which your search terms appear). If viewed in Hathi, you can search and see a list of page numbers in which your search terms appear For most of these, the expectations is that they will eventually flip to full view, but this may take years.
	PROGRIO	Special, one-time project for course reserves in Hathi. Content was not digitized through Google. No full view is available
	XLARGE	There are 3 titles with thousands of barcodes for digitized volumes, so additional holdings are needed to store the barcodes. Because of the large scale of volumes, special handling is required to send updated metadata to Hathi or Google for these volumes. LTS can submit updated metadata upon request. BOUND location code- historical information

This code was implemented to solve a specific problem:

All location transfers are based on barcoded item records. Only the holding associated with the transferred item gets updated. If a title has no item record, because it is bound with another, or is part of an analyzed set, the title's holding does not get updated when a parent/sibling title is transferred. The scope of this problem is relatively small but occurs in a significant proportion of cases. For patrons, the problem can cause them to think the volumes are on campus when in fact they have been transferred offsite.

For example, the holding of an analyzed title below indicates the volume is in WID-LC. The parent title, though, may have been transferred to offsite storage, and the holding for this volume would not be updated, because the item record is on the parent.

Solution:

The new BOUND location code displays in HOLLIS as (Check holdings). This prevents the patron from being misled about its physical location .

The 977 field of the holding will direct the patron to the parent/sibling record when requests can be made.

Example:

A monographic series bib has item records for v.1 - v.5. Its holding reflect real location of items (such as WIDLC, or HD).
If v.1 -.v5 each has an analyzed title, where the holdings has 977, these holdings can have the BOUND code. I
If, beginning with v.6, staff started putting the items on the anaylzied title, rather than the mono series, these new holdings would have the real location.
In summary, the holding with the item(s) gets the real location. The holding with the 977 gets the BOUND code.
