Zines
General information on housing/cataloging
- Individual zines are housed in zip lock bags with stiffeners and put into a Hollinger box with other zines. Serial zine issues can be put in the same bag if there is enough room.
- Only the first zine in a box will have a barcode and an item record.
- All other zines in the box will not have item records and will be linked to the first zine in the holdings record once they are fully cataloged.
- At accessioning they all should have item records so they can be put into the Cataloging-in house work order. These will be withdrawn from Alma once fully cataloged.
- Oversized zines can be housed in Zines Box 32

Descriptive cataloging
RDA 2.4 Statement of responsibility–core, transcribed
2.4.2 Statement of responsibility relating to title proper
<Consider signed intros to be SORtp per 2.4.2.2(b); not required for serials but strongly encouraged)
2.8 Publication statement–core, transcribed
2.8.4 Publisher's names
If name of publisher doesn't appear elsewhere; consider statements of responsibility related to title proper to be publisher's name
3.4 Extent, core
"LC practice/PCC practice for Core element: For serials and integrating resources, both the number of units and the term indicating the type of unit are required for a completed or "dead" resource (in any format) for which the total extent is known. Only the term indicating the type of unit is required for a currently-published tangible non-print resource (e.g., computer discs), for a currently-published integrating resource, or for a completed or "dead" resource (in any format) for which the total extent is not known. Extent is not required in all other cases."
<SCH practice: unless zine is unusually long, give page counts for unnumbered pages; RDA does not give particularly detailed instructions on how to count pages; follow DCRM(B) 5B8.1:
"If the whole volume is unpaginated or unfoliated, count the pages or leaves and record the total in arabic numerals within square brackets. State the total in terms of pages or leaves, but not of both. Begin the count with the first page or leaf of the first gathering and end the count with the last page or leaf of the last gathering, as instructed in 5B3. Count all blank pages or leaves." In practice, this includes the "covers" unless the outer leaf is printed on a different kind of paper (e.g., card stock).>
Zinesters without authority records:
RDA chapter 9
9.19 Constructing access points to represent persons
Generally do not disambiguate unless there is conflict in the authority file.
Exception: always add birth/death dates if known
9.19.1.8 Other designation
Use (Author of [name of zine]) as other designation of last resort; if author of more than one zine, prefer (Zinester), or type of zinester, e.g., (Riot grrrl zinester), if known.

Use "pamphlet bound" as an umbrella term that includes saddle-stitching, saddle-sewing, side-stitching, and side-sewing. Since zines are commonly saddle-stitched, there is no need to specify. But you could specify side-stitching or side-sewing if notable. Add either staples or thread for the fastener. Do not specify "original."
Example: Pamphlet bound with staples in illustrated paper.
Example: Pamphlet bound with thread in illustrated paper.
Example: Pamphlet bound and side-sewn in illustrated paper.
